The State Flag of Hawaii (Aloha State)
Hawaii consists mainly of the Hawaiian Islands, an archipelago near the geographic center of the North Pacific Ocean, and other islets unrelated geographically to the archipelago; in all, 8 main islands and 124 islets, reefs, and shoals. The major islands in order of size are Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau, and Kahoolawe.
Hawaii entered the Union on Aug. 21, 1959, as the 50th state. The name of the state is taken from the island of Hawaii and is a Polynesian word or name of unknown meaning. In the 19th century the name was extended to the entire archipelago.
Commissioned by King Kamehameha himself in 1816, the state flag of Hawaii is the only state flag to include the British Union Jack. This flag has been flown continuously as Hawaii changed status from kingdom to protectorate, to republic, to territory and finally a state. The eight white, red and blue stripes stand for the 8 main islands of the archipelago.
Our version of this flag is made of light-weight polyester for durability and is 3' by 5'. |
