The State Flag of Illinois (The Prairie State)
Illinois entered the Union on Dec. 3, 1818, as the 21st state. It is known for its associations with Abraham Lincoln. The state was transformed into a leading manufacturing region in the late 19th century but continued as a major producer of farm commodities. Chicago, a great metropolis on Lake Michigan, is Illinoisís principal economic and cultural center. The name of the state is taken from that of the Illinois, or Illini, Indian Confederation.
The Illinois flag depicts the Great Seal of Illinois on a white background with "Illinois" printed in blue lettering beneath the seal. In the eagle's beak on the seal, there is a banner with the state motto, "State Sovereignty, National Union." The dates on the seal, 1818 and 1868 represent the year Illinois became a state and the year in which the Great Seal was redesigned.
Our version of this flag is made of light-weight polyester for durability and is 3' by 5'. |
