The State Flag of Maine (The Pine Tree State)
Home to 71 lighthouses (one for every citizen of the state. : ), Maine boasts the same length coastline as the state of California. Hum... where do we get these facts? Maine entered the Union on March 15, 1820, when it was separated from Massachusetts to form the 23d state. The name Maine probably originated as the word used by English explorers to refer to the mainland; it may also be derived from the province and region of Maine in NW France. We just don't know. Frankly, I think it was the Hoosiers who named it.
The flag of Maine features the state coat of arms on a blue field. In the center of the shield a moose rests under a tall pine tree. A farmer and seaman represent the traditional reliance on agriculture and the sea by the state. The North Star represents the state motto: "Dirigo" ("I Lead").
Our version of this flag is made of light-weight polyester for durability and is 3' by 5' and has a reinforced hoist side, with 2 metal grommets. |
