The State Flag of Mississippi (Magnolia State)
Probably the second state most kids learn to spell, maybe the first, because it is so much fun! The Magnolia is both the state flower and the state tree.
Mississippi entered the Union on Dec. 10, 1817, as the 20th state. Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, resided here. The name of the state is taken from that of the Mississippi River, the name of which is derived from an Algonquian Indian term for ìbig river.î
The Mississippi is the last state to retain the rebel flag as a part of its state flag. The flag consists of the the rebel flag in the top left corner (canton) and the field of the flag being the blue, white and red bars. A very attractive and symbolic flag, which will hopefully lose its offensiveness to some folks over time.
Our version of this flag is made of light-weight polyester for durability. It is a large 3 foot by 5 foot flag, and has a reinforced hoist side, with 2 metal grommets. |
